Just something I felt like writing after watching End of Evangelion
for the thirtieth time.

'Kimochi warui.'

In the pause which followed Asuka's words, Shinji's pathetic sobs
subsided, finishing with a deep groan. He rolled off of the girl and
stood with his hands to his face. After a further moment, he shuffled
out of Asuka's peripheral vision. The scratching sand beneath his
shoes betrayed his progress as he moved further away.

  Straight up, in the sky which Asuka stared into, there was a misty
red line, curved to fit the darkened, light-flecked dome. Intangible
clouds hung without motion. The unnaturally clean air was cool
against her face and throat.

  There was no sound of the boy. Her breath caught, and her chest
ceased its gentle rise and fall. For nearly a minute she simply
looked upwards, still uncomprehending of what was happening. The
boundary of her vision began to gradually close in, the sight of the
sky becoming ever so slightly dimmer.

  'Sutte.' The thought entered her lingering consciousness, taking
grip upon her mind and tearing her out of the reverie. Her chest
rose and her head bent back, as she coughed loudly once and gasped
for air. Asuka's hands clutched over her chest; she gulped deep
breaths for a long while before becoming more subdued. Then she sat
up.

  She examined her bandaged body. 'Mada ikiteru...' she murmured.
Her mind could barely accept her surroundings. Her wide eyes slowly
scanned the alien landscape. She brushed at the white sand stuck in
her tangled auburn hair. A spot of familiarity in her strange world
was approaching the shore.

  Asuka sat and watched Shinji walk up to her. He was similarly 
dishevelled, in his uniform black trousers and shirt. He held half of
a coffee pot, which had had a cursory clean, filled with clear water.
As he sat beside her, she saw a trickle of blood upon his lip. He
offered the broken jug.

  'Hai. Ki wo tsukete,' he warned in a quiet voice, proffering the
side with the least jagged and sharp edge.

  'Arigato,' Asuka said, and drank. She placed the pot between them.
They listened to the waves and gazed out over them at the enormous,
broken visage of what looked like Ayanami Rei. The moon had proceeded
noticeably toward the horizon.

  'Ima, kibun wa dou?' Shinji asked.

  'Yoku naru wa.' She drew her knees up and hugged them. 'Shinji...
Nani ga okotta no?'

  The boy hung his head. 'Boku wa... Boku wa sekai wo owarasetanda.'

  Asuka looked down as well. 'Sou...'

I don't think there are spoilers, because you just won't know what's
going on if you haven't seen End of Eva. What? You don't know any
Japanese? Okay:

sutte   = from 'suu', to breathe in
mada ikiteru  = 'I'm still alive' (Asuka says simply 'ikiteru' - I'm
              alive, when she wakes inside Unit 02)
ki wo tsukete = 'be careful' (Shinji doesn't want her to cut her lip)
ima           = now
kibun wa dou  = how do you feel
yoku naru   = getting better ('wa' is a feminine ending 'particle'
            or something)
nani ga okotta no   = 'what happened?'
boku wa sekai wo owaraseta  = I brought the world to an end
