I hate 3D Studio Max
Modelling a spaceship: 2 hours
Figuring out how to texture a planet: 2 hours
3D Studio Max crashing: GAO DESU!!!
Doing random little adjustments and wasting a lot time: 2 hours
Can’t finish rendering a 4000-frame animation in time to meet the assignment deadline: priceless
I rock.
How did Makoto Shinkai make Hoshi no Koe on his Power G4 Mac without going insane is beyond me. And yes, I do realize that the sun shouldn’t be visible in the last picture…

I was going to point out that the last picture the shadows are wrong, but aye. Take away the sun and it’ll be fine.

have you tried blender?
October 19th, 2006 at 10:50 pm
The shadows aren’t wrong. There’s a second light source and the sun is actually below the ship.
It’s not wrong, just screwed up.

Nice model and texture if you ask me, especially for two hours of work. When I ask my artists for stuff, they usually take at least a couple of days to get even the model up.

what is this excatly? school work?
October 19th, 2006 at 11:06 pm
Yup, school work.

GONZO is better. Woo.

“How did Makoto Shinkai make Hoshi no Koe on his Power G4 Mac without going insane is beyond me.”
Thats probably due to the fact that MAX is not available on Macs, and generally isnt commonly used in Japan.
Look at Maya or XSI, for god’s sake, they have japanese language setting and japanese help files right off the conveyer.
I switched from MAX to Maya…learning XSI now…

For one day of work, not bad. Now you know what it’s like to work a half-day in the industry. lolol
And don’t forget that it took YEARS for Makoto Shinkai to get where he is now. Can you imagine doing this for years?

Hey, 3d Studio Max~ Is this th Autodesk stuff? I had to work with the program for the past three years for FIRST Robotics competitions… Modeling was hell for me, but texturing was a lot of fun… I think I had less trouble in that department than you. ^^;;

Out of curiosity, did that lame laser effect magically appear in project file the other morning ? …
oh man, I just got lamer.

DM, you have no idea how frustrating it is at first.
Then animation kicks in and you start cursing and swearing like a drunken sailor on crack.

Don’t you just love 3D…?
Say bye-bye to your social-life (the animation program at my school, we primarily use Maya).

“Then animation kicks in and you start cursing and swearing like a drunken sailor on crack.”
And then, after some large amount of invested time, you suddenly realise that you’re actually good. :)

Well even if you learn 3Ds Max you will get annoyed with it very fast. If you know other 3D programs you will know your are dealing with a moron interface and moron “solutions” which is rarly tested before publishing.
You usually have to plan your way around all the things that makes Max crash ! Its amasing for a program that cost in danish kroner ca. 30 000 KR !!
I have been working professionaly with 3Ds max since version 4 and have done all around kind of work with it. Compared to other 3d programs out there it sucks in not being stable enough. Support !? …. LOL ! you think the people who made an more and more unstable 3D program would know the reason for your problem .. of course not !
Wanna get into 3d … lean blender and save your savings for when you really need it.

I totally agree:
After using 3D studio since 2.5, I’ve not found a version yet that is either:
Stable
User friendly
Industry leading
Worth the money
But alas, this is the program I am forced by my employers to use.
With Maya now devoured by this mediocre company, I get that sinking feeling again. Max wasn’t even built to be a proper 3D program, it use to be an extension of auto CAD, also a terrible program (if you have ever had to use that nightmare, then seen how good solidworks is you’ll know what I mean).
To top it off, they re-release the same crap each year with the same crappy bugs every time! And they expect everyone to fork out money for this tripe.
Abandon ship people, Max is a con.

I love 3ds max with all of it’s bugs =) maybe it’s just habit?! =)
December 15th, 2008 at 4:48 am
No, it’s the other way around, you just suck at 3ds max.
December 18th, 2009 at 4:06 am
I work 10 years in 3ds max, and i dont see whats your frustration? You just suck at 3d at all thats the problem, 2 hours for a ball object plus texture. You should commit suicide man no joke :P, thats less then 2 minutes work what you did.

Try another software package!
Here are some options:
