A look into an otaku’s room
As some people might know, I just moved house a few days ago. I finally finished unpacking today and I decided to take some pictures.
Warning: Pictures may be extremely disturbing to the uninitiated.
Turn right (although no one in the right mind would do that since you’d be facing the wall) after stepping through the door and you’ll see two large Evangelion posters that identify me as a level 12 Eva fanboy. Mana is hawt. That’s a not-for-sale promotional poster for the PS1 version of Girlfriend of Steel. I found it at Mandarake Shibuya for ¥200. Yay.
Right across the door is where I spend 90% of my waking hours, excluding school.
Generally I do my stuff on the main monitor. The secondary monitor is mostly for IRC, Winamp and some misc. widgets.
The rig below is a Pentium 3 with a dead HDD. I was using it to run Linux, but it’s dead now. At least until I move a HDD over.
A Coolmaster case. It’s so cool that the PVC figures above it have not melted yet. In fact, it’s so cool that there’s a penguin sitting on it.
Louise stands above my Creative subwoofer.
Behind is the promotional poster for Maaya Sakamoto’s “Kazemachi JET” single. I have the one for Yunagi LOOP too, but it was damaged when I took it down during the packing. I failed as a Maaya fanboy. orz
I have no idea why the penguin is there. It just is.
My wallet’s coin compartment has a huge hole, so I took out all my coins. That’s a Mahora school crest on the keychain.
When she’s not on a holiday, Saber sits on my desk. Gao.
Behind Saber is a wallscroll of Tama-nee. It’s a promotional item from Messe Sanoh that came with the limited edition copy of ToHeart2 XRATED. I bought it from Lashinbang in Ikebukuro for ¥2,000.
And now we come to the interesting part…the shelves…
The storage area belong Kasumi is where I dump everything that can’t be displayed. I should invest more in displayable stuff, like posters.
I seem to be missing some books. Oh well. Maybe they got lost in one of the bajillion boxes during the move. Hopefully they’ll turn up one day…
My “study” desk. Do you see any studying materials around? I think not.
My laptop. It’s trying and failing to boot Linux off a Live CD. Sigh…
My phone charging. HARUHIISM FOREVER!!!
My HP printer and, uh, some CDs… Okay this is getting lame. Let’s wrap up with some shots of the posters and pencil boards that are haphazardly pasted all over the place.
And finally…
Everyone knows that I have a thing against displaying posters with folds, but Feena is an exception. :3
BTW my room is defended by a USB missile launcher. So don’t even think about it!
December 20th, 2006 at 4:56 pm
ERM MIND I ASK, where is your bed?
December 20th, 2006 at 4:57 pm
Real otakus don’t need beds.
December 20th, 2006 at 6:12 pm
LOL this is because he has two rooms. He’s a big boy now.
Btw your cabinets are nice but a horrible colour. And you have so much merchandise you gay fanboy!
December 20th, 2006 at 6:18 pm
“Real otakus don’t need beds” – so true, I usually sleep on the floor or the love sac that I have. Anyways, your room is nice. I especially like the green table/shelve/cabinet set. I could use one of those.
December 20th, 2006 at 6:24 pm
Hey I have those Da Capo mangas as well. I should take pictures of my room, once I get it cleaned up.
December 20th, 2006 at 6:43 pm
i sense neck aches in the morning
December 20th, 2006 at 6:46 pm
Lol, are you always this tidy or is it just for the pictures? ;)
(Err not that I’m that way. Nope, not at all.)
December 20th, 2006 at 6:54 pm
I am…always this tidy.
…
…
ORZ OK THAT WAS a LIE.
I just moved in remember? :P
December 20th, 2006 at 7:15 pm
Hi DarkMirage,
LOL at USB missile launcher. Now you need a USB targetting laser and you have an auto-defense system!
No one touches Mana! XD

The color combination of your room is considerably *flattering* in otaku society …
December 20th, 2006 at 7:23 pm
Oooo I love your printer.
December 20th, 2006 at 7:29 pm
It’s the most organized otaku room I’ve ever seen.
December 20th, 2006 at 7:29 pm
my god…
December 20th, 2006 at 7:56 pm
which issue was the “brave” Megami sacrificed for the bunny girls poster? Anyway cool room and coms.
December 20th, 2006 at 8:01 pm
Never a good idea to put a subwoofer near a CPU, it will cause interference since subwoofers are never magnetically shielded.
December 20th, 2006 at 8:01 pm
October.
December 20th, 2006 at 8:05 pm
Damn, why does everyone have cool rooms! WHY WHY WHY!!! First tsubaki, then TJ now you! *whips out boxcutter* you know the rest..
December 20th, 2006 at 8:53 pm
Oh such a nice room, I wish I could have one like this (but i’m sooo messy ^^; )
December 20th, 2006 at 9:07 pm
Nice missile launcher there…now i know what to buy for my pc.
December 20th, 2006 at 9:13 pm
nice room…
but you still need to blog about Haruhi @ Gaza ;)
December 20th, 2006 at 9:16 pm
Very nice room setup! But good luck keeping it that clean for very long…. :)
December 20th, 2006 at 9:16 pm
M.D.: Pfft. Everyone else did that already.
December 20th, 2006 at 9:18 pm
Looks like just another regular HDB block bedroom. No offence, and not meaning to boast, but otakus like you need bedrooms like those you find in masionettes, like mine. That extra space always helps.
Two comps and a laptop. Now that I have to envy. Plus all the posters in your room.
I have a necklace with the Mahora logo, just like your keychain. Ironically, gotten from Comics Connection.
December 20th, 2006 at 10:25 pm
My dream room :D~~~
December 20th, 2006 at 10:52 pm
LOL … u bought tat USB missile launcher thingy … i was thinking of getting that too …

December 20th, 2006 at 11:11 pm
I fail as a otaku, my room is normal. LOL.

December 20th, 2006 at 11:31 pm
@kazeto: yes, you can use two monitors for one pc if your graphic card support it
My room is normal though… :P
December 20th, 2006 at 11:32 pm
A much tidier room than mine! O_o
December 20th, 2006 at 11:36 pm
if you were to sell your room, how much would it cost in total? as in the whole comics and galges and H dvds and poster and figurines and computers and carpeting and computer accecersories and games in your room…In total, how much does it adds up? yOu are indeed singapore’s HARDO gay Otaku…We ARE PROUD OF YOU /~_~\

Chicken, I said it already. Megami October issue.
Jimbo, I am a professional hikikomori.
December 21st, 2006 at 1:19 am
Nice room. Just that it looks more like a study room than a bedroom, except that it doesn’t really look suitable for studying in.
I like the penguin though…Where did you get it?
December 21st, 2006 at 3:05 am
For health reasons, you should sell at least some of the stuff on those shelves.
December 21st, 2006 at 3:08 am

someone: That’d be my ex-classmate.
December 21st, 2006 at 10:27 am
My room is pretty normal, though that’s something that’s slowly but surely changing.
Oooh, USB missile launcher…
@elohir: Guess that when I really fix up a nice room, I shouldn’t let you see it?
December 21st, 2006 at 12:57 pm
OMG. David Chan?
December 21st, 2006 at 3:08 pm
Holy cow…look at all those stuff. ‘Drools’…
December 21st, 2006 at 3:14 pm
oh well.. i guess im the only few guys that have a hikikomori room.. orz
December 21st, 2006 at 3:32 pm
I LOL’d like LOL-tan when I saw the USB missile launchers. So that’s how the goods get defended from evil hands. XD
December 21st, 2006 at 4:01 pm
You people and your computers. I barely have one and that’s more than enough to handle. I used to have that HP printer… until it died.
Anyways, true it is scary to the uninitiated… that or they think it’s a little girl’s room what with all the cute little girl pics (not counting the more suggestive figurines and oics of course.
December 21st, 2006 at 4:10 pm
Light, are you saying I should flip that Feena poster over? The reverse side. (NSFW!!!)
December 22nd, 2006 at 12:07 am
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b272/XDKang/AK007.jpg
Not the best picture of it, but it’s good enough a comparison to your keychain.
December 22nd, 2006 at 3:31 am
Honestly, I’m most amazed by that Megami poster. North American magazine poster inserts have impossible to remove creases. Looks like I’ll be spending even more for overseas shipping.
December 22nd, 2006 at 4:44 am
Very nice room and a great collection. The USB missile is a nice touch =D. I wish I was able to get even a bit of a collection/collectables going orz. I hate not understanding Japanese and being in the US >
December 22nd, 2006 at 6:02 am
I took a look at your laptop. Try forcing acpi=off when booting. And be sure to use a new kernel. And yeah, cool room :P
December 22nd, 2006 at 10:59 am
Now it boots, but I can’t get my integraded WLAN working. Sigh…

I was thinking, “This room would be perfect for my girlfriend, sans the posters/figurines.” I hope you aren’t gar. I have seen enough gars in my real-life lifetime.
BTW, what distro are you using to boot the LiveCD? I want to find out more.
As for the handphone, it looked similar to my 902SH Vodafone, except that mine’s black. Please confirm, over.
December 23rd, 2006 at 10:57 pm
Backtrack.
It’s a 903SH.
December 24th, 2006 at 2:16 am
rich guy… =D
love your room setup… and all those posters…
December 24th, 2006 at 4:26 am
Are you still in Singapore? That room no longer has a characteristic of a singaporean room, except for the fact the interiors are bright. I wonder who funds your crazy collection though. I pray that you won`t become a hikikomori like me.
December 24th, 2006 at 1:11 pm
I remembered I had sold off some of the bedroom set units in the past.
Pretty nick and spacious when the parents buy the unit set for their children. :)
Take off the 3′ single bed, which is always noisy if u r too ‘demanding’ using the bed while not long enough for those over 170cm, it makes a nice wall shelve set. Better still, have the ‘leather’ bed head remove it shall be better!
Strongly ‘apalling’ by the choice of the bedroom set colour. Wasn’t the set have a deep blue colour for choice?
Anyway, I like your PC table, I would get one myself in future.
Does your table setup have any PC heat ventilation problem?
With door close, air-con down, will u sweat to flood and cpu hot as volcano?
December 29th, 2006 at 10:47 pm
ah, chang xi?
figures.
nice room u got there anyway. haha, like fantasy room.
how do u clean ur room with all those stuff ard,

[...] Shiok’s house is neat and tidy. He’s got space to display his stuff. And the younger ones like Tsubaki and Dark Mirage have also straightened out their caves. That gave me enough motivation to get my room sorted out for the new year. I need to create space for further expansion (of my collection). So I decided to clean out the cabinet above my wardrobe. That’s where I kept the boxes and cases of candy toys/trading figures. [...]
January 6th, 2007 at 5:39 am
Man, you must be rich. PS-Awesome posters, but how did you manage to get that “bunnies” poster out of the Megami Magazine and eliminate the creases.
January 23rd, 2007 at 3:00 am
shit, i hate living in this shitty country (Norway), it’s nearly impossible to get any good (or new) wallscrolls/posters/anime merchandise in general. I envy you, you bitch. :/
February 5th, 2007 at 8:25 am
illusion, norway is ranked #1 in human development index and like GDP per capita…etc. Don’t you dare call it shitty. Imagine living in say africa for example.. then u can say something like that.
Oh and nice room btw, the aqua green furniture totally ruins it in my opinion but you probably wont be changing it anytime soon (otakus dont give a damn about furniture)
March 14th, 2007 at 1:09 pm
*puts up his own USB missile launcher* LOL Wish I had that.
April 14th, 2007 at 2:34 am
Seems like everyone is a Feena Fam Earthlight fan. I have the dakimakura cover. DM, if you’re wondering where to get one, you should order Dengeki G Magazine Vol. 6. It covers alot of content on Yoake Mae Yori Ruri Iro Na.
PS do people in Singapore speak English?
April 14th, 2007 at 2:37 am
Must be very difficult to dust and maintain so many anime goods. How do you do it?
April 14th, 2007 at 2:39 am
Neutral colors really complement a large anime collection.
April 14th, 2007 at 2:48 am
Sugoi! I knew Singapore was on of the world’s cleanest countries, but I didn’t it also went for peoples homes.
April 15th, 2007 at 4:06 am
LOL i wish i had THAT FEENA POSTER but i am still young =( cant order via net or whatsoever and btw we speak english… (saw that create zen V i haf the same thing ^^)
April 18th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
How the heck do you hang up your posters? I tried using this magnet method to hang them but the magnets were simply too weak and they’d end up dropping the poster…
I don’t see any thumbtacks on your posters… Or magets… And I don’t see any tape either, and they certainly aren’t framed… So how????
April 20th, 2007 at 4:51 am
Guyjin: If magnets didn’t cut it for you, you should buy the sticky squares that come in a 12 pack. They are used to hang up posters without tearing them and keep them from shifting. They work well. You can get them at Wal-Mart, at the posters section.
April 20th, 2007 at 1:51 pm
Nice, thanks for the reply. What do you think about those sticky pads in comparison to the adhesive putty? I saw both and I was wondering which would be the best overall. Seems like the putty can come off the poster easily (That’s a plus for me since some of my posters are double sided, with an image on either side), but some people told me they leave a slight stain if left for an extremely long period of time.
Are those sticky pads also removable from the poster itself, or are they more like a permanent fixture?
Thanks for the info, love your room btw ^^
April 22nd, 2007 at 3:20 am
I would choose the sticky squares over the putty any day. They work very well. They do not stain, as I have been using them for quite some time and they are easily removed without damaging the poster. Also, you can eliminate some its stickiness by aplying some moisture or rubbing off some of the bonding material. In addition, they are super easy to apply and bond to any surface that isnt wet.
May 4th, 2007 at 8:12 am
Where did you get that Feena poster?
June 5th, 2007 at 6:31 am
