This leads to weak Van Der Waal's intermolecular bonding between different layers of carbon. This explains why layers of graphite slide of each other with little force e.g. when you're writing with a pencil, and why the lead is brittle. But due to the nature of the hybridized bonding graphite displays decent tensile strength because the sp2 hybrized covalent bonding can stretch!
