Identify this song!
This song is Sayonara wo Kikasete by Nanase Aikawa, a veteran female J-rock singer. It’s the B-side of one of her earlier singles from the late 90s and it is one of my favourite songs from her. This is not the song I am looking for.

However, I know for a fact that there is an 80s song with English lyrics and a male vocal out there somewhere that has the exact same tune as this song for its chorus. The rest of the song sounds rather different but the chorus is an almost perfect copy. I used to know the song’s title but not any more. (Getting old…)
I’m not sure if Nanase lifted the (rather catchy) tune subconsciously via osmosis or whether Sayonara was meant to be a tribute, and I can’t find any information about this online, whether in English or Japanese. So, please leave a comment if you know the title of this elusive song. It’s driving me crazy.
Incidentally, I just found out today that Angela Aki‘s Kiss From A Rose — another song I love — is actually a cover: the original Kiss From A Rose is by Seal. My whole life is a lie.

The chorus hardly sounds exactly similar, and I heard of the tune but never knew the song’s name, so this is likely a long shot in the dark.
2 Be 3 sang “Even If“, I remembered it as a female vocalist (Roxanne was the first one I thought of) but whatever. Look at the chorus’ lyrics.
Also, wut, I thought Kiss From A Rose was one of the most famous songs out there from Seal, then again it was in 1994 and I was only 12 then (which would make you 6 years old at the time or something).

I like Kiss From A Rose.
Btw, another of her songs, Aoi Hikari, is a cover of Procol Harum’s
A Whiter Shade of Pale.
And Ito Yuna’s Endless Story is a cover of Faith Hill’s If I’m Not In Love.
Bwahaha.

Kiss from a rose has oddly been one of my all time favourite songs, thank you for linking this cover. Best version I’ve heard yet! :)

I think Seal’s original recording had more passion in it. There’s more to music than striking notes. That chorus does sound familiar. Probably heard it in a movie or something.

Perhaps I could have a stab at this.
Nik Kershaw – Wouldn’t it be good.

It’s always fun and frustrating looking for songs you don’t know the name of but know the tune of.

I don’t know the song, but I can tell you a method I use whenever I’m in this situation.
1. Find some local radio station that isn’t too big or too busy, but plays the genre of music that represents your mystery song.
2. Using piano tones or some other sound, recreate the tune you’re looking for and record it. I connect a microphone to my computer, then record the sound of me playing a keyboard.
3. E-mail the sound file to the radio station and ask if they could help you identify the song.
It’s worked for me before. I wish you luck!
