Full disclosure: I was contacted by M80, a grassroot marketing agency, who is representing Warner Brothers. Since I’m such a sellout and I’m lazy to fill this blog with actual original content, I agreed to help them publicize this.

Appleseed

The contest involves mixing your own Appleseed: Ex Machina trailer using the soundtrack and footage provided. Apparently there is a built-in editor on the website, which probably means that you can’t use your own preferred video editing software with all the cool effects you learnt from wasting your life on making AMVs on YouTube.

The trailer with the most user votes wins. The winner gets a free trip to San Francisco in February for WonderCon.

The contest ends on February 7th and the DVDs for the movie will be out in stores on March 11th. Find out more from the contest site.

サンタクロース

　皆さんがサンタクロースを信じなくなったのは何歳のことでしたか。一年間に一回しか働かない赤い服を着ているおじいさんが北極に住んでいて、しかもクリスマス・イヴの一晩だけで全世界の子度たちにプレゼントを送ります。物理と常識からみると、こんなおとぎ話はどう考えてもありえないでしょう。では、なぜ今でも世の中にサンタを信じている人がいるのでしょう。

　ある計算によると、そんなにたくさんのおもちゃは最低でも５千万キロの重さで、それを動かすためには３６万匹のトナカイが必要だそうです。で、サンタさんはクリスマスの朝までに全世界のよい子供たちにプレゼントをすべて届けなければならないというわけで、リュージュの時速は毎秒１０００キロぐらいじゃなければ全然間に合わないんです。とすると、５千万キロの物体が毎秒１０００キロの時速で動き始めると、サンタさんは摩擦で起こった熱のせいで一瞬に燃え尽きてしまいます。この計算をした人が言いたいのは、サンタさんが存在していたとしても、もう確実に死んでいるということです。

　冗談は別として、世界中の人たちはどうしてサンタというおとぎ話を必要としているのでしょうか。実は心の奥にサンタが存在しない、するはずはない、という事実がわかっているのに、なぜ大人たちはまだ子供にサンタの話を伝えるんでしょう。

　それはそこに希望があるからです。理屈でサンタを否定することは簡単にできますが、ちょっと寂しい気がしませんか？本当はサンタさんが存在するかしないかどうでもいいんです。子供たちはプレゼントをもらって、自分が愛されていることを感じます。子供はサンタさんからプレゼントをもらって、自分がみんなが知っているサンタさんに認められていることを感じて、そしてそれは子供の励みになります。子供に希望を与えます。

　皆さんはノーラッドを知っていますか。いいえ、サンタさんのトナカイの名前じゃなくて、NORADとは、アメリカとカナダの航空宇宙領域の防衛を担当する、二国軍隊組織のことです。で、なぜサンタの話に突然防衛軍隊組織が出ているのか。実はノーラッドは１９５８年から今まで毎年サンタさんの追跡をしているからです。そして、クリスマス・イヴにサンタさんの位置を電話とネットで子供たちに伝えます。もちろん本当にサンタさんをレーダーで見つけられるわけがありません、それはただ子供たちが喜んでくれるためにつく嘘です。

　サンタさんは本当にこの世に存在しているかと聞かれたら、私はもちろん存在しませんと答えます。でも、たとえサンタが嘘だとしても、子供たちに希望と幸せを与えられるなら、それはそれでいいんじゃないかと私は思っています。
