I’ve come from 11 years in the future to say, that it wasn’t the Virgin debacle that got fans up in arms, that was a side-effect. It was because neck deep in a really romantic, lovey-dovey arc, they slap in both the ex-lover and the fact that Nagi drops Jin like a fucking rock to merge with him and then basically tree-rapes people until she gets exorcised. It’s that which pissed off so many fans, the feeling of that romance being ripped to shreds because some asshole turned up and took mcs girl. And thus the thoughts extrapolate to “Did they fuck? Is that why she dumped MC?” And logically, fans who were invested in that romance will get angry. Because what was being sold to them as a fun, pure romantic comedy with some light fight scenes was suddenly ripped apart with this revelation. Death threats are certainly not warranted, but fan outrage is warranted when the author of something you like, does something that pisses you off. So they stopped buying the books. And Kannagi faded into nothing. I only found out about it after looking through character stuff I found in old reddit posts. In the end, it was retconned to be she never had a lover and it meant something else, and in the last chapter she kinda dies and its very anticlimactic.
