I love the TV series but I didn’t know there is a book. When it comes to movies I always had a thing on knights, kings and queens stuff… I love the old fighting style compare to guns and bombs stuff.

I haven’t seen the series, though I read (most of) the books a while back. I’d recommend that you read ’em: george r r martin has built one of the most richly complex and immersive worlds out there, and the books do a great job of balancing the action with the political intrigue – and these finer nuances prob won’t be picked up as much by the tv series

I've yet to see any of the HBO series, but the books are absolutely wonderful. I'm glad to hear they've gotten such good representation on the screen. I know GRRM was very keen on being sure to cast the perfect actors for their roles. As for inspiration, GRRM has been writing sci-fi and SF-istic modern fantasy for decades. As it turns out, all my favorite fantasy writers are actually SF writers by trade. If you end up getting depressed by the realism in the fates of far too many characters in ASoIF, don't let that taint your image of GRRM; ASoIF is far grittier than his other work (though not necessarily any darker, per se). Even if you don't read ASoIF, I highly recommend checking out some of his other works. I wasn't a big fan of Wild Cards because it really plays to the misogynism of the era, though it was well done. But Dying of the Light, Fevre Dream, and Windhaven (with Lisa Tuttle) are all truly excellent. And if you like classic sci-fi, Tuf Voyaging is good fun (though neigh impossible to come by). And, of course, he did a tour in Hollywood writing episodes for the Twilight Zone and Beauty and the Beast (a modern fantasy).

The books are great. Absolutely. Although, yes, if you read them before you watch the show (or the second season) it’ll probably spoil some great moments. I’d still read them, though, because the books are awesome.
