I don’t like to give spoilers because I think they ruin the experience, but episode 13 is basically one huge spoiler, so it’s kind of difficult to talk about it without revealing anything. As such, I have decided to skip the episode summary this time.
Thoughts
I am not going to say that the most important event in this episode was entirely surprising. Characters in a story often have their roles to fulfil, and it was quite clear that this particular character had no other role to play in the grand scheme of things. That said, we had only just returned from Zero’s expedition in China, so the timing of this episode feels rather sudden. It is almost as if the writers are rushing to make things happen in time for the mid-season climax…
Sayako as a character in Code Geass interests me, because it makes me wonder whether her role as a super ninja maid was planned right from the start of the first season, or if it was a decision made along the way due to plot necessity. What’s next? Maybe Tamaki will reveal himself to be a competent Britannian spy who managed to expertly fool everyone into believing that he’s a hot-blooded idiot.
Interestingly, Lelouch rates everyone in the Black Knights by their intelligence, combat ability, charisma and loyalty, just like an RPG game. But those stats are clearly wrong. There’s no way Kallen has such low intelligence and charisma. >_< And somehow Tamaki ranks the lowest on almost everything, even loyalty.
The Jeremiah plot-twist is a bit of a WTF moment. Did anyone see it coming at all?
Opening
The new opening song is by FLOW and the ending song is by Ali Project. I have no particular feelings for either, except that perhaps the OP sequence has a lot of cheerful people for a song titled “WORLD END”.

That said, it was still a relatively good episode, lots of twists and turns and setup for what’s to come. Still sad though.
The only thing I found odd was the sheer amount of eye artwork they seemed to be recycling from Kiddy Grade. Anyone else notice that? I don’t recall noticing them doing it with Code Geass before.
i thought this was the best episode all season. to make me sympathize for characters i usually don’t care about is good writing. also the whole episode had a building sense of dread and suspense and multiple betrayals that i felt was a welcome change from the robot fighting / upgrade game. though i would have liked maybe a scene with kallen, just so we know like. yknow. what’s up with her being held hostage. all that.
interesting that diethard’s loyalty is right on the fence. and if i’m not mistaken, shirley makes no appearance whatsoever in the OP anymore. should be a hint.

I found Shirley’s death scene touching in a way, but also kinda creepy. Her movements and actions a little prior reminded me somewhat of Misaki from Welcome to the NHK! …but that’s just me.
I second your comments about Tamaki. He gets way too much screentime to his credit.
The Jeremiah twist was unexpected. Ending twist was moderately expected yet I found myself severely pissed at its occurrence. Good posting as usual.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Lulu just found himself a powerful new friend, one that will allow him to use the Geass multiple times on the same person. And he’s also got an awesome new reason to be emo. Something tells me we’ll be seeing a lot of Black Knight pwnage in the next few episodes.

Oh poor Rollo. Always so jealous of everyone else when it involves Lelouch. He even killed Shirley ’cause she threatened to bring back Nunally. And that Rollo wanted Lelouch to let him suck his his penis instead of Shirley. Tsk tsk. Can’t wait for Lelouch to finally kill his ass when Rollo tries to get Nunally next. Or even Kallen! That bastard. Speaking of Kallen, why the hell has he not even remotely thought of a plan to rescue her? Maybe he will with Orange now. He betta.

i saw the jeremiah plot twist coming, in the Picture book dramas from the first season jeremiah tells Villeta about how his first assignment was to guard marianne but he failed and how he regretted it, especially after her children, lelouch and nunnally, “died”

If anyone is heartless, it’s Rolo (underneath his kawai shota appearance >_>)…This is the first time I actually felt for Shirley (and not just thought she was annoying as hell). Will Lulu cut off his brotherly loving from Rolo from now on? (he should be able to figure things out)…
As for the episode, plenty of good intencity…the Jeremiah plot twist was worth waiting for…^^ And it never gets old seeing C.C or V.V get shot in the head and still going strong! >_< (well we haven’t seen the knife-in-head before or V.V doing the stunt, but…)

but it makes me worried, that the scene where nunally and kallen talked, mightve converted kallen to go britannian or something like that. The designs on the guren and lancelot look too similar …
hopefully that doesnt happen….anyhow the fact that lelouch was geassing her again, tells us that people can be re-geassed if they had their prior effect can celled.

I actually felt really sad when she hit the bucket. Sure it was fast but it was sappy and cute and I thought she might just make it.
Nunnally Kallen has to mean some sort of wierd flip going on there.
I only hope Jermiah doesn’t screw up the balance of the show. What made Geass so awesome is that Lelouch had to win in situations with certain “rules”.

For a character that originally was supposed to die episode 10 last season, orange-kun has now become an important character thanks to joining sides with Zero and appreantly leading the black knights to the cult headquarters according to the preview.
And Cornelia is still the most Gar character of Code Geass, proving it by mercyless stabing V.V. right between the eyes without even considering he looks like a child.

Interesting I found it to be a very short 24 minutes.
In my own words, I’m shocked. (amazing words huh?) I was just starting to really like the whole Shirley and Lelouch thing, I even abandoned my hopes for Kallen and Lelouch and (gasp) C.C. and Lelouch.
But geez, its only got me wishing for more. And my thoughts about the Suzaku Kallen paralelling (or whatever) is because Kallen’s gonna go to the dark side :O or the Guren is gonna be used by Britannia .
As for space…I really hope It doesnt go to space.
And my last thought for the moment. Lelouch had very little humanity left in him after season one and his love for Shirley was a manifestation of his human side…now that she’s dead I expect him to be a bit more ruthless and evil (just how I like him).
P.S. (I know I said “last thought” but) omg C.C. is showing emotions!!!
Shirley’s tragedy kinda reminded me of how I felt when that blonde girl (Louise?) in Gundam 00 lost her hand and couldn’t wear the ring. Though in Shirley’s case, it was more emotional for me. But like “d” said, this was one of those rare times when a show made me care and sympathize for a character that I didn’t really care for at the start.
Am i the only one who think Orange-kum is making it up? I mean, he became a heartless bastard who kills eveyone when he feels like it, and is a V.V. ally, there must be some awesome brainwash behing it

Anime is like a soap opera… dead people come back…. just ask Orange-kun(and all those redshirts in the black knights, okay, I know… star trek reference). Actually I don’t remember him dying, but I don’t remember season one very well (or most of season 2 now that I mention it).
Also like to state, the dub of season one had to be the worst dub I’ve heard in a while…. barring pokemon (if only I could stop commercials, is it me or have the voices gotten worse since growing up?) and everything they show with a card theme (though I must admit dual masters wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be, even the content was funny some of the time, reminded me of the ghost stories dub)

Now that you mention it…the first time I watched the episode I thought he was sincere but during the second and third time (I know 3 times in one day) he seemed kinda to fake it AND I dunno if this is a spoiler or not but in the review for episode 14 it says “V.V. is cornered by Lelouch but then the demonic mech Siegfried appears” So i guess it kinda fits that he betrays Lelouch (then why was he crying?)
Unlimited energy time for gundam, err.. Knightmare I guess. Geass now really look like Gundam seed to me, I guess Nunally or someone will let kallen out of prison, give her The Guren updated with unlimited energy, then she flies with super speed to save Lulu ass
Great episode! I wonder if Rollo really killed Shirley, since they conveniently didn’t actually show it. It’s entirely possible that someone had sneaked up behind them, he used his Geass, fight ensued, Shirley died. Haha, it just seemed totally unnecessary for Rollo to kill Shirley. I hope it means his true nature is showing. I read off somewhere that the death was later found to be a suicide, and the bullet in her abdomen came from the gun she was holding. Hmm. Can’t wait for Turn 14!.
And I lol’d at the spoiler pic. Rather, there wasn’t any Kallen at all in the entire episode! That whole scene with Nunnally really left me hanging.

Somehow the new wings for Guren & Lancelot remind me of the Destiny Gundam. The revolution for the Guren’s right arm is really something awesome though. It goes like this:
Five-fingered silver arm > Three-fingered full silver arm > Five-fingered silver with black arm > Five-fingered GOLDEN arm
The parallelism of the Guren and Lancelot in my opinion is that they are rivals, it does happen in certain openings.
In my opinion, the fact that Rolo killed Shirley is partially Lelouch’s fault, not that I’m against him or so. The reason for saying this is because Lelouch kept emphasizing on their relationship, making Rolo feel that he should be the only one beside Lelouch whether to support him, bring him happiness or being his brother, and he does not want other people to take his place. He became jealous and angry when Shirley mentioned about Nunnally and made his move to eliminate her.
I found it strange that Suzaku was strangely missing in action.
He was at the exact same location as Rolo, Shirley, Orange and Lulu.
Suzaku also has a reason for killing Shirley. He might have wanted Lulu to experience the loss of a loved one. As lulu has killed euphy.
Thus I wonder if the person who killed Shirley was Suzaku and not
Rolo?
Suzaku was already getting lots of attention by showing off his ID, then taking command of the firefighters and military.
He even commanded the guards to protect her.

Although, Rolo will always be emotionally unstable and absolutely freaking insane, so he might go kill Suzaku, despite the fact that he shot someone who got in the way of his and Lelouch’s relationship.
I think Shirley’s death was good for Lelouch. Atleast now he can go back to being heartless.. I kind of liked him more that way anyways.

I’m thinking Shirley’s death went down like this,
After Shirley began talking, Rolo narrowed his eyes because he saw someone behind her & then when she said Nunnally, he activated his Geass, but not before the person (Suzaku?) pulled the trigger, and because he can’t stop pysical objects, Shirley got shot while Rolo took off after whoever shot her.
So it made it look like Rolo killed her to the viewers.
Dude, Shirley was normal. And cute. And voiced by Orikasa Fumiko.
I wish you wouldn’t be quite so elated to see her die.
I personally would prefer if it was Rolo who shot Shirley, because then they could have Lelouch exact revenge on him. Which would be really cool, him shooting Rolo despite him being very useful for Zero’s cause, like “I may be a plotting bastard, but there are some limits.” Very human indeed.

Right at the beginning when i first saw Rolo in the command centre writing his homework i thought “What a underdeveloped and unused character he is”… “Do someting with him!”…. but i didnt want to end this way :)
And I don’t like those sad episodes when someone dies because i’ve already imagined beuatiful life for those persones in the future so this one makes me quite angry… but whatever it’s just another Anime :D

Anyone else worried by the possibility of Kallen joining Britannia? She’s one of the better characters in the show with one of the coolest Knightmares and while I’m sure she would change back by the end, I think it would be unfortunate to have her spend a good chunk of R2 being a villain.
Plus, ever since Lelouch started going off about the power of the heart and doing it for all of his friends instead of just his sister he’s pretty much eliminated the gray area in this show IMO, basically he’s just a hero now. A calculating hero, but a hero nonetheless. After all, last I checked Suzaku’s current motivation is revenge while Zero’s is the power of the heart. This makes Kallen joining Britannia more distressing than it would have been in the first season when they had mild good-sides.

I don’t care if it was Rolo or Suzaku who killed her. Either way it could be a set up to finally get rid of at least one more annoying character. If it was Rolo, well I don’t see Lulu having that hard of a time getting revenge on him, and if it was Suzaku it might just finally make Lulu forget his friendship and finally have him killed. Now that I think about it I hope it’s Suzaku, I’ve hated him ever since he was introduced but especially since he went completely emo after Euphy’s death. But for that same reason I doubt it was Suzaku, he’s needed in the show as the biggest (current) opposition to Lulu and the Black Knights.
Kale Rylan: No I’m not worried about Kallen joining Britannia. She hates Britannia and prides herself on being half Japanese. Also it would work against the storyline of the series. She is the one and only truly skilled pilot in the Black Knights. If she betrays them the entire group will get wiped out in one or two episodes, even if there was a miraculous return of Lulu’s normally brilliant tactics/strategies. Kallen is the only one who has kept Suzaku and the other Knights from completely ripping the Black Knights to pieces in combat.

Poor Shirley, all she did was shoot Viletta lol. Nothing worth a cruel death. But hear me out, it is within the realm of possibility that Shirley committed suicide. Since her love for Lulu seems to be unrequited and that Zero killed her father, perhaps her mixed feelings makes her feel like it would be the only way?
Now that Lelouch has Jeremiah, Rolo doesn’t really serve a purpose anymore does he? They’re both assassins, but Orange-kun is a cyborg. C’mon Orange-kun, exceute that son of a gun ^.^
And the whole V.V. thing freaks me out, he’s like Orange-kun. Won’t stay down for long. Cyborg? God? Geass-user? There is much left to the imagination. Still, Cornelia ftw.
